Plagued by an over-anxious brain, the author embarks on a journey toward creativity and confidence after hearing her student, Zarmina, find vocal freedom and move other students to tears with her song. As Thérèse searches for ways to free herself and her students from fragmented learning, restricted voices, and the fight or flight response, she learns tools to accelerate learning and transcend anxiety. These tools include engaging the heart and gut, slowing down, improvisational comedy, breath work, movement, and more. She shares students' success stories along with the neuroscience behind the process. This is a transformative book which can assist educators and students as well as those who want more creativity and confidence in their lives.

I sincerely wish the writer, Therese Ayla Kravetz was my teacher of English because I high-maintenance to my English was much better than it is now. How to book writer pays attention to its students that is truly inspiring. Even the writer describes his fears in their communication and how to overcome them. For some reason the book I was reading out loud even though it really does not do often. Tips writer are so detailed and well described that they are easy to follow. In the book, we have so many tips that help not only to learn but also to be set up in life. All in all a writer us through her book, helps us to know ourselves and use all its potential to overcome the hidden fears and feelings that are impeding the expression.

This was a well written and inspirational book about the power of positive techniques to change your mindset and approach to life. The author relies heavily on breathing exercises, mindful motion, and theater exercises to bring about personal change. The book is packed with personal anecdotes from the author's many years of teaching, and her honesty regarding her failures in the classroom is quite refreshing.

I will say that I think the subtitle and blurb for this book are a little misleading. The focus is largely on how to teach effectively using these techniques. I'd put the book under the heading of an inspirational handbook on teaching than a self-help book on overcoming anxiety.

Still, it's a good read, particularly if you're into positive psychology, mind-body connection, and that sort of thing. I think teachers will get some good techniques from it as well.

Note I received a free copy for a nonreciprocal review.
Why Zarmina Sings is packed full of practical advice. Written by an educator, the book outlines eighteen steps anyone, not just an educator, can use to overcome anxiety. It is very well written, easy to follow, and is ideal for anyone looking for ideas that can be put into practice immediately.

By sharing her experiences working with students from young children to adults and from a wide range of backgrounds, the author weaves together stories of overcoming fears and self-doubt, both the students’ and her own. The very relatable issues faced by both the author and her students serve as a springboard to easy, practical ideas for dealing with those issues. From simple breathing techniques to using props and costumes to listening to your gut, there are ideas for facing down whatever causes anxiety and prevents one from reaching his or her potential.

As a substitute teacher, I found many valuable suggestions in the book that I will definitely try in the classroom. As a woman dealing with everyday life, I found intriguing ideas that apply to situations I face day after day. This enjoyable book has something for everyone.

This elegantly written book was an absolute pleasure to read. Starting on the first page, I knew I was going to enjoy reading about Why Zarmina Sings. Beginning with an introduction to the inspiration for the title, and following through with the 18 Steps to Live and Learn Beyond Anxiety, this was an enjoyable and informative book. It comes from the perspective of an educator, and it focuses much on how to use what one learns from this book in teaching and learning. But it is so much more than a great book on how to inspire and motivate students or oneself. Anyone, in any profession or life situation can learn from this book.
Each of the steps is given its own chapter. Rather than being written in a “Step 1” then “Step 2” order to follow, they’re put in an almost fluid flow, Chapter 1 seeming to naturally flow into Chapter 2, and so forth. They build upon each other. Perhaps I’m not explaining it well. Here’s an analogy it was less like going up a set of steps where each step is a level, helping me climb to a higher level, and more like climbing a sloping hill, with each chapter leading upward. Some chapters I found I connected with more than others, but all of them were good. I especially liked the chapter that explored examples of how returning soldiers might deal with PTSD. I’ve never been in the military, but my dad and brother have, and I appreciate the sacrifice and service of the service men and women in the military.
I recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about how to deal with anxiety in a positive way, or anyone who simply would like to be enlightened with some uplifting ideas about how to make life better. After all, we all deal with anxiety at different points in our lives, and to different degrees.
Again, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Great accompanying text for anyone trying to improve in the classroom and outside of it. I'm buying several more copies for friends.
Enjoyed learning practical techniques that have decreased my anxiety to try new things. Each chapter has real life examples that show how learning comes alive. A great resource to help students get involved in classroom learning.
